Research Summary:

Our study aids healthcare operations in designing successful, cost-effective transitions for those patients moving from a hospital to a home setting following kidney transplant. We found that when former patients mentored current patients for a month after discharge, anxiety levels decreased noticeably. Although these current patients were also 12 times more likely to be readmitted during that time, analysis suggests this may be due to their reporting complications sooner, which allowed them to get treated earlier.
