Lester Fellowship Program connects interns to industry

June 16, 2022 - Susan T. Burtch

This summer, a few select VCU students will have the opportunity to explore risk management and insurance during a three-month paid rotational internship program. Thanks to a grant from the Lester Charitable Fund, a component fund of the  Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, at the recommendation of James Lester (B.S. ’62), these interns will receive valuable hands-on experience at three different companies.

“The Lester Fellows is a unique experiential learning opportunity,” says Robert Taylor, Executive Director of the Risk Management and Insurance Program. “We are thrilled for these students to gain in-depth learning and diverse experiences in the industry.”

Both the students and the companies were carefully selected. Two rising juniors and one rising sophomore will spend one month each at FCCI Insurance Group, Markel and Marsh McLennan. There they will gain exposure to different functions ranging from underwriting and claims processing to operations and risk services. These varied opportunities will give them a valuable real-world advantage as they discover their talents and develop specific career interests prior to graduation.
